An honest, but reprehensible mistake

Aparently a clerical error has caused the Army a good deal of embarrassment. Letters were sent to 75 officers killed in action and 200 wounded in action asking them to return to duty. The army's personnel office is sending people around to apologize to the families of those men and women to whom the letters were sent.

Whomever sent out these letters needs to lose their job over this. This kind of mistake can't happen. How do you make up for an embarrassment of this sort?
